  1. When is BSA going to offer Merit Badge Counselor orientation online. This would be a great help to all of us.

    • Our troop made up its own power point presentation that the adult members can view on the troop website; we simply took the BSA literature and added more pictures. Since there is no certification required (at least not yet) it meets our needs. Specific questions are directed to the Advancement Chair.

Many districts or councils also offer live MBC orientation at the monthly roundtables or at the University of Scouting; if yours doesn’t, ask and maybe they will.

    • There is a MBC orientation presentation on scouting.org

The Essentials of Merit Badge Counseling
This PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes covers the required procedures for merit badge counseling, clarifies the role of counselors in the BSA advancement program, and discusses the appropriate approaches to use in working with Scouts. It is intended as an instructor-led presentation to counselors of any experience level and takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete. Download PowerPoint Presentation , Download Presenter’s Notes PDF

  2. If it wasn’t for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, which sponsors the Merit Badge there wouldn’t be this class. Sometimes it is nice to have a sponsor that is involved to this extent.

  3. I just completed the so called on line training.for the new merit badge Mining. There was no sound but this site stated that we would hear something. But after a half hour was up and a number of screens. Came a screen that said I qualified to teach the new Mining Merit Badge. But how do I prove that ?

  4. Eric you needed to do the software test first, prior to the online training to make sure you had all the necessary “free” software to participate in the training. I would recommend you consider signing up for the second class being offed and do the necessary quick software check … I participated in the training and felt it was a very interesting, well thought out training and should be done with all new Merit Badges moving forward. (A+ for the training session I was happy to get the background information of the Merit Badge and thoughts from some of the individuals who worked over many years to make this Merit Badge Available.
